Monopoly: Our Nation’s Inherent Racism Exposed

What are the two most expensive properties on the Monopoly board?  Boardwalk and Park Place.  Boardwalk implies beachfront property.  Park Place is probably next to a park, and parks are generally nice.

What are the two cheapest properties?  Baltic and Mediterranean.  Baltic and MediterraneanBecause immigrants live there.

The next cheapest?  Oriental.

Not quite sure why Vermont and Connecticut follow Oriental.  But I’m sure there’s a reason that’s, you know, insidious.

i think Mediterranean sounds pricier than boardwalk. med sounds fancy and boardwalk sounds trashy and hot doggy.

Interesting interpetation. It would be interesting to check the rents in the neighborhood of the Boardwalk in Atlantic City between 1929 and 1936. If they differ significantly in relative terms, then your interpretation might be correct.

All of the property names are names of streets in Atlantic City.

Park Pl is indeed next to a Park (Brighton Park), and it leads right to the Boardwalk. See

Oriental, for example, is kind of away from the action.. to this day, there isn’t much there.

The more expensive properties like Pennsylvania are right in the middle of the casinos.

I vote not inherently racist.

Thanks a lot for exposing my ignorance of East Coast gambling meccas, Ezra. But please stay tuned for my next post, “Atlantic City: Our Nation’s Inherent Racism Exposed.”
